CLIENTS
Southern governorates, especially Basra suffered a lot due to ex-regime negligence to the area vital need for irrigation water to keep the living of people and creatures there. The canal transporting water across Shat AlArab River was the major project that Ministry of Irrigation planning in Basra.
The ministry awarded these projects through its state companies (Al-Rafidain, Al-Iraq, and Al-Faw) to rescue the deteriorating of agriculture in south Iraq.
This project helped transporting irrigation water through Shat Al-Arab without being salted with sea water of Arab Gulf, using a canal of about (127,4) km to irrigate the farms and rural suburbs around Shat Al-Arab, Abi Al-Khaseeb, Seeba, Cihan, Faw, until Ras Al-Beesha close to the Arab Gulf.
This project water discharge was of (30) m3 /sec. and it included building (5) primary and secondary pump stations as well as cross regulators, vehicles and pedestrian bridges.
We built a water siphon that transports water via steel pipes going under Shat Al-Arab River water, taking into consideration the depth needed in order not to obstacle the ships navigation movement in Shat Al-Arab.
The main need for this urgent project was proved as studies showed that the water level in Shat Al-Arab River is too low to allow for irrigation due to shortage of water coming from Tigris and Euphrates to less that %30 of the natural rate.
Even the water coming through Iran wasn’t enough to leverage the water level. As the water discharge during sea tide (of Arab Gulf) is (1200) m3/sec., this is another factor that called for the urgent action to change the water scheme and solve this critical irrigation crisis.
This project is a first step of a series of projects that should be resumed to rescue the area.
The north canal is (40) km starting from Kuteiban, transporting irrigation water to a fish lake going for (2,25) km, then going in a curve of (90Ëš) angle to the right parallel to Shat Al-Arab River through agricultural areas, reaching the express way connecting between Iraq and Iran for a distance of (8,5) km, all through mine field.
